In 1955 Emmet Till , 14 years old, was tortured and murdered in Mississippi after accusations that he whistled at a white grocery cashier clerk. Mamie Till Mobley, his mother, insisted that the casket containing his body be left open, because, in her words, "I wanted the world to see what they did to my baby." She went on to become an activist and educator. In 2022, Spectrum Dance Theater presented "Grief," choreographed by Donald Byrd, with the aria by composer Andy Teirstein.
