Village-To-Village is a project initiated by Animal Stone Productions, which gives 20 children in the village of Thiaroy, Senegal, north of Dakar, the tuition payments to attend school. The project came about after the Teirstein family visited the family compound of Fode Sissoko, a master Kora player and Griot. They found that Naime Sissoko, the matriarch of the compound, was singlehandedly caring for numerous children with very little means. Back in New York, the Teirsteins gathered musicians for a benefit concert at the Brotherhood Synagogue. In collaboration with the African Center for Cultural Empowerment, about $8,000 was raised for the Village-to-Village cause. This work has continued each year.
